Cicely Tyson was born on December 19,1933 in New York New York,New York,USA.Cicely Tyson was raised in Harlem by devoutly religious parents.Her career started when a friend of her ask her to model for a hair show.at the hair show a photographer from Ebony magazine saw her and she began her successful modeling career.within a few years she was among the most successful black models in America. She quickly rose to the top of the modeling industry. In 1957 she began acting in Off-Broadway productions she had small roles in feature films before she was cast in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter as Portia in 1968.
Four years later she was nominated for an Academy Award. For Best Actress for her great performance in the critically movie Sounder in 1972. She went on to portray a 110 year old former slave in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.She earned two Emmy's. She has no appeared onscreen because of her loyalty to only strong, positive images of black women. She is without a doubt one of the most talented, beautiful actresses to ever have be on stage and screen. She worked as a secretary and model while establishing herself as an actress.Will only portray strong images of women Co-founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem with Arthur Mitchell. She got married to Miles Davis by Andrew Young at Bill Cosby's house. Bill Cosby was the best man. Now residing in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. In 1979 she was the Thursday night host for CBS Radio. In 1980 she was still Thursday's host when it became "The Mutual Radio". She is the aunt of Cathy Tyson.
Cicely Tyson is the first African American Actress to win an Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Television Movie for her performance in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All. In 1972 she and singer-actress Diana Ross were both nominated for"Best Actress in a Leading Role" Oscars for their performance in Lady Sings the Blues and Sounder respectively.
She made her stage debut in a mid-1950s YMCA production of Dark of the Moon. In 1957 her first film was an uncredited role in Carib Gold with Ethel Waters.In 1963 she played George C. Scott's in a gritty drama about social works in Harlem, East Side/West Side. The show had ratings and was canceled midway through its first and only season. But Cicely was the first black female character in a American TV series who wasn't written as a nanny, maid, or menial worker. She joined The Guiding Light becoming one of the first black actresses to win a regular role on a soap opera. She starred with Paul Winfield in Sounder and was nominated for an Oscar in 1972.
She also played Coretta Scott King and Harriet Tubman. In the camp classic The Concorde: Airport 79 Cicely played a mother rushing a heart to her ailing son with Robert Wagner,George Kennedy, and Charo.She appeared on Broadway in production of The Corn Is Green it was poorly reviewed and closed after only two weeks in 1983. She was fired because she took a night off to attend a tribute to her husband.She sued the producers. It took 15yrs but she won.Her husband is Miles Davis an jazz musician.She starred in many movies such as:
